It's quite useless if you show 5+ posts on the homepage of a skin

Refactor it as an external plugin or remove it totally ... 1 less query and less data that comes up from the database

Really this query is used into the master page. It means that all pages "must" show the recent post, and in other pages there isn't a similar query. In any case the query result should be cached.
